WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:
One in four Pennsylvanians currently are aged 60 years or older, and by 2030, one in three will be in this age bracket. Agencies on Aging have not received an increase in their regular block grant allocations since 2008 meaning they have been flat-funded all these years despite the increase in cost of living and inflation.
Recently, local legislators passed the PA budget and Aging funding was completely omitted. Because elected officials did not vote to transfer $15.2 million from PA Lottery profits, Union-Snyder Agency on Aging, Inc. is facing a budget deficit of $362.000.00. This means our Agency will have 10% reduction in our annual budget to support important programs like Home Delivered Meals, Congregate Meals (senior center meals), Personal Care, Personal Emergency Response Services, and more.
Unless the Legislature and the Governor correct this severe omission, older adults in Union and Snyder counties will be denied these essential services. State Senators and Representatives can reverse the path of cutting these services by passing a supplemental budget bill this September to transfer $15.2 million from the Lottery Fund to the Department of Aging.
Please join us in urging our elected officials to introduce, pass, and send this critical supplemental appropriation to Governor Shapiro as soon as possible.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?:
1) CALL, WRITE, or VISIT your legislators to voice your concern. Let them know how critical Aging services are, and encourage them to advocate and VOTE on your behalf.
