About this program: In 1998, Pennsylvania began the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program in Delaware County as a pilot program. Mercer County was added to the program in 1999. By the year 2002, all counties in Pennsylvania had become part of the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program. In December of 2006, the Federal Program Regulations Final Rule was published. The purpose of SFMNP is to (a) provide low-income seniors who are nutritionally at risk, resources in the form of fresh, nutritious unprepared foods (such as fruits and vegetables) from authorized PA farmers; and (b) expand the awareness and use of farmers’ markets and increase sales by participating farmers.
The SFMNP goal for 2026 is to increase the number of low-income seniors receiving the SFMNP benefit and increase the statewide check redemption rates; increase eligible senior participation; and recruitment of market sites in areas where lower SFMNP check redemption rates have been experienced. See section 10 for ideas on how to increase redemption.
Suggestions and identification of problem areas by participating senior agencies may be directed to: Farmers Market Nutrition Program, PA Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Food Assistance, 2301 N. Cameron Street, Harrisburg, PA 17110-9408, Attn: SFMNP Administrator or call 717-783-5309.
